The irrigation schedule calculates more cycles than my controller will allow. What can I do?
The best answer is to replace the controller with one that has more functionality. If that is not an alternative:
- Check to make sure the infiltration rate of the soil and the precipitation rate of the
sprinklers are correct. A greater number of cycles is usually due to a low infiltration
rate and a high precipitation rate. For example, spray nozzles with a precipitation rate
of 2.10 inches per hour should not be used on a slope with an infiltration rate of .22
inches per hour.
- Check to make sure the root depth of the plant is not too deep. Seventy percent of the
moisture extracted by the roots occurs in the top fifty percent of the root zone
