The Dimensions command will allow you to set certain properties to avoid the repetitive entry of information during the design process.

To set the dimension options:

  1. Click on the Dimensions tab.

  2. In the Dimension Layer Settings area, select the layer assignment for placing dimensions on the design screen.  Click on the New dimensions will be placed on drop down menu and click on preset dimension layer or document active layer.  If preset dimension layer is chosen, the dimensions will be drawn on the layer as set in the Preset Dimension Layer Name text box.  If document active layer is chosen, the dimensions will be placed on the current drawing layer as indicated by the symbol to the left of the layer name in the drop down menu or Layer Manager window.

To draw dimensions on a layer specifically for dimensions, enter the Preset Dimension Layer Name in the text box.

Select a Preset Dimension Layer Color by clicking on the colored rectangle one time with the left mouse button to open the Color dialog box.  Select a color and click on the OK button.  For more information within the Color dialog box, press the right mouse button for What's This help or click on the Question Mark near the top right corner of the dialog box and then click on an item.

To adjust the color of the existing dimensions on the design that are drawn on the Preset Dimension Layer, click on the Apply button.

  3. Under the Dimension Settings header, adjust the characteristics for the extensions, text and arrow as necessary.

Enter a distance for the Extension Overshoot and Extension Offset in the associated text boxes.  The Overshoot is the distance the extension line extends past the dimension line.  The Offset is the distance between the points set for the dimension and the beginning of the extension line.

The Text Offset is the distance the dimension text will appear above or below dimension line.  Enter a value in the Text Offset text box.

The Text Alignment determines if the dimension text will appear above (Top) the dimension line, in the Middle, or below (Bottom) of the dimension line.  Click on the Text Alignment drop down menu and click on the selection of your choice.

You can select the arrow symbols to appear in the dimensions including their type and size.  Click on the Arrow Type drop down menu and click on the selection of your choice.  Enter a size for the arrow type in the Arrow Size text box.

To adjust the existing dimensions on the design, click on the Apply button.

  4. In the Dimension Font Settings location, select the font style for the legend by clicking on the Font drop down menu and clicking on the desired selection one time with the left mouse button.  Click on the Bold and Italic check boxes until a checkmark appears to enable the selection.

Enter the height of the font in the Text Size text box.  The size is related to the units of measurement setting.  For example, a setting of 10 will equate to 10 feet or 10 meters depending on the units of measurement setting.

To assign a color to the font, click on the Text Color button.  Click on the color of your choice or enter the Red, Green, and Blue values in the associated text boxes.

To adjust the font, size and color of the existing dimensions on the design, enter or select the values and click on the Apply button.

  5. Click on the Close button to exit the dialog box.

Note:

  • Select the Display Format and Precision in the Options command on the General tab.
